Blending the old and the new

28 June 2013

Retrofitting buildings with new energy-efficient control systems is an effective and economical way of reducing energy usage and costs. For buildings of cultural, historical or architectural importance – retrofitting is often the only option so it’s crucial to use a company that provides tailored, high quality solutions using the most up-to-date technology.

Specialists in the design, installation and maintenance of B.E.M.S. Control systems, Powell Systems Engineering has used its experience, expertise and product knowledge to upgrade and improve the control systems at the Palace of Westminster – bringing the long-term home of the UK Government into the 21st Century.

At the Palace of Westminster, essential systems were becoming increasingly old but had yet to be replaced as they continued to work. As part of a major restoration scheme, the building’s antiquated heating, ventilation, electrical and fire safety systems were to be replaced with new technologies to complement traditional parliamentary process.

Following an independent assessment of the agreed options to establish the best and most cost-effective way to restore and renew the Palace of Westminster, Powell was appointed to complete a two-part retrofit project. This would comprise the removal and replacement of dated control systems and a five year service contract to ensure a smooth transition.

For the first part of the project, Powell completed the full upgrade of all Non-Trend Control Systems over a strict two year timeframe. The company then stripped out the Siemens Apogee which had been used in Portcullis House for over four years. To complete the strip out element of the refurb, Powell also stripped out the American Auto Matrix systems from numerous buildings at the site.

Powell then completed the installation of over 200 x Trend IQ3 Controllers and over 500 x Trend IQ 212 Controllers. Both the IQ3 and IQ 212 offer full compatibility with other Trend IQ controllers which enables them to integrate with the local environmental needs and bulk air conditioning system to optimise both comfort and running costs.

Following the installation, Powell will complete a five year maintenance and service contract. Offering full planned preventative maintenance support with regular scheduled visits, Powell ensures that the B.E.M.S. is fully optimised and maintained to deliver optimum performance. The service contract will also prevent unwanted breakdowns, minimise operational problems and prevent higher operating costs.

With energy costs always on the rise, it is imperative that businesses take energy management seriously to not only protect the environment but to also keep costs to an absolute minimum. With more stringent environmental regulations also inevitable, the Government appears to be preparing by getting its own house in order – with the restoration and renewal of the Palace of Westminster.
